I have spent much of the last few years researching, writing and editing a historical biography - a life and times book - on Eric Elliott Reece a twentieth century Australian state Labor premier. The book has been published by Bokprint, Launceston, Tasmania, in conjunction with Maribyrnong Press, Melbourne.
Why a book on Eric Reece? Reece was premier of Tasmania from 1958-1969 and 1972-1975. He was Federal President of the Australian Labor Party at the time of the 1955 Split.
Reece was the first Australian political leader to be confronted by concerted environmental protest when flooding a beautiful small highland wilderness lake, Lake Pedder, as part of a power scheme issue became a national debate. One of the world's first environmental political parties, the United Tasmania Group, came out of the debate and was the forerunner of the Wilderness Society. It was during this period that Reece was given the nickname 'Electric Eric'.
The book, Electric Eric. The Life and Times of Eric Reece, an Australian State Premier is printed on premium quality paper and the cover was designed by graphic designer, Rowan Hill.
